Breakout the Pandemic Movies

Given we’re still knee-deep in this pandemic and, it looks like it isn’t going away anytime soon, and, of course, jumping on the bandwagon quoting favourite pandemic and virus outbreak movies, here’s my selected viewing these last few weeks:

    • THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971) — The film follows a team of scientists as they battle the outbreak of an extraterrestrial virus, in New Mexico, after a satellite crashes back to earth, with disastrous results when the virus begins to mutate.

    • 12 MONKEYS (1995) — This film centres on Cole, sent back from the future to 1996, in order to source a deadly viral outbreak that ultimately devastates the population of the planet, leaving a remnant struggling for survival.
    • OUTBREAK (1995) — The film focuses on an outbreak of a fictional Ebola-like Motaba virus in Zaire and later, in a small town in the United States. Primarily set in the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the fictional town of Cedar Creek, California. The plot speculates how far military and civilian agencies might go to contain the spread of a deadly, contagious disease.

  • CONTAGION (2011) — This film is COVID-19 filmed back in 2011 that quite scarily, almost predicts what we’re going through, right now. As scientists and society battle a virus as it runs rampant though, in the case of the movie, a vaccine is discovered and administered before we’re all dead.

Funny how it seems like 1995 was a year for virus movies, well, at least two made my viewing list. And who could miss out watching the movie that probably started it all. Or, at the very least, reading Michael Crichton’s book, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, which now seems like a visionary work. Did he predict the future, or was it all just so inevitable? Though it is true, Crichton wrote about a fast-mutating extraterrestrial virus, it is still, nonetheless, a frightening film and holds up well even after all this time.

Like CONTAGION and OUTBREAK, each covers what is, right now, very familiar ground. A virus running rampant without any apparent cure, and people too stupid to realise death is a permanent state. If humanity is to survive, it needs to prepare, and it needs to know how to get ahead of an outbreak before it kills too many and overwhelms the system built to contain it.

Sound familiar?

And you, what are your favourite pandemic movies at the moment?
